About
The Basanta Poster Competition in Legal Medicine is an annual competition hosted by the American College of Legal Medicine (ACLM) that provides an opportunity for students, young professionals, and members/fellows to present their research on topics related to legal medicine. All submitted posters will be displayed and/or presented during the 2025 Annual ACLM Conference, scheduled to take place at the Hilton University of Houston from February 28 to March 2, 2025. The Basanta Award is named after Eugene Basanta, JD, LLM, a national expert in health law and policy. The award recognizes Prof. Basanta’s contributions to the field of legal medicine and his commitment to educating future generations of medical-legal professionals.
Eligibility
There are three categories of eligible participant authors:
- Student: includes any college students, postgraduate students (law student, medical student, medical resident, medical fellow, etc)
- Young professional: includes any professional within the first 10 years of practice
- ACLM Fellow or ACLM member
Entries meeting the following criteria will be considered for the Basanta Award:
- At least one participant author must be eligible as above.
- The poster (abstract) must be presented at the 65th Annual ACLM Conference in Houston, TX.
- Posters (abstracts) that appear to be advertisements for a business or service or that endorses or promotes a product will not be accepted.
- No more than five posters will be accepted from a single first author.
- Each entry must be submitted by the deadline in the requested format, submitted by the deadline, and submitted by email at the designated email address.
Format Instructions
- All posters must be in PowerPoint or Google Slides and information must fit on a single slide.
- All abstracts of posters must be in Word or Google Doc with standard letter size paper with one-inch margins on all sides, in 12-point Arial font, and should not be more than two pages in length.
- All posters (abstracts) must list each author’s name followed by their degrees, position, institution, city and state, and email address. If multiple authors are from the same institution, their names, degrees, positions, and email addresses should be listed followed by the institution, city and state.
- The poster (abstract) title should be centered and boldfaced.
- The authors are responsible for receiving permission to republish any copyright material such as a chart or figure.
Submission / Deadlines
Deadline: Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at 11:59 pm is the deadline for submission of papers.

Judging
- All posters (abstracts) will be judged by the Student Awards Committee based on originality, relevance, thoughtfulness of analysis, and quality of writing. The Committee’s decisions are final and may not be appealed. The Committee reserves the right not to award prizes if the entries do not meet the standards set by the Committee.
Prizes and Awards
- There may be a winner in each category: student, young professional, and ACLM Fellow/member
- Winners in each prize category will receive a plaque and $500
- Each winner will be given an opportunity to present their poster on stage at the conference (no longer than 10 minutes)
- Each winner will receive a complimentary one-year membership in the American College of Legal Medicine.
- All abstracts/posters will be evaluated for publication in The Journal of Legal Medicine.
Student Travel Funds
