Dear Esteemed Colleagues in Law, Medicine and Dentistry,
I am writing my first letter to you as the 55th President of the American College of Legal Medicine. I am humbled and honored to lead this unique and influential group to new heights in the Medical-Dental-Legal world.
We are now about 6 weeks out from our very successful 65th Annual Conference which was held in Houston Tx. I trust that all who attended enjoyed the conference and we look forward to seeing all of you at the 66th Annual Conference which will be held in Pheonix, Arizona. I would like to recognize and thank Dr. Hamid Latifi and Dr. Jan O’Dell, the conference chairs who did an amazing job putting together the line-up of outstanding speakers and wonderful networking events.

During the Annual Conference the Annual Meeting of the Fellows took place. Election of the new ACLM Executive Committee and members of the Board of Governors was held. I would like to congratulate the following Fellows who were elected to leadership roles in the ACLM:

Dr. Hamid Latifi, first term of Board of Governors.
Since the Annual Meeting of the Fellows, two vacancies on the Board of Governors arose which were filled by:
Dr. Ellia Ciammaichella
Dr. Christopher Meredith
You can find the Bio’s of the Executive Committee and Board of Governors on the ACLM website at the following link: https://aclm.org/leadership/
I would like to recognize and thank Dr. Eli Avila, the previous ACLM Immediate Past President who rotated off the Executive Committee. Dr. Avila has contributed a wealth of information, insight and encouragement to the Executive Committee throughout his tenure on the BOG and EC, and his judicious comments will be missed in the EC meetings. His dedication and loyalty to the ACLM are unmatched. His contributions to the ACLM are numerous but to name a few recent contributions; he was Chair of the virtual 2022 Annual Conference, secured the venue for our most recent Annual Conference in Houston, authored several chapters in the Legal Medicine textbook, and his legacy will forever be recognized as he is credited with designing and implementing the elegant regalia that the Executive Committee and Board of Governors has been donning the past two years at the Annual Meeting of the Fellows. He has expressed that his hopes are that all of our Fellows will present to the Fellows meeting wearing the official ACLM regalia. I am pleased to announce that he will continue to be involved in the College on the Amicus Committee and as Chair of the Merchandising Committee. Thank you Dr. Avila for your past and continued service to the ACLM.
2025 Gold Medal Recipient
Dr. Michael Vinluan, the ACLM Immediate Past President, received the 2025 ACLM Gold Medal at the 65th Annual Conference. Dr. Vinluan served as an amazing President, and continues to lead the College. He has tireless dedication to the ACLM, and has been involved in just about every aspect of the College business. He pays meticulous attention to details, and is in every respect a model leader. I offer my heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Vinluan for receiving the ACLM Gold Medal for his numerous accomplishments and the indelible marks he has made on the ACLM.
Lifetime Service Award
S. Sandy Sanbar, MD, PhD, JD, FCLM – ACLM Past President and ABLM Past Chairman was awarded the 2025 ACLM Service Award. The ACLM recognizes his exceptional contributions and unwavering dedication to the field of Legal Medicine. As Past President, Editor of eight editions of the Legal Medicine textbook, and Chair of the A Day with the Judges conferences, his leadership has profoundly advanced our profession and will continue to shape the future of Legal Medicine for years to come.
Honorary Fellowship award
It was with great pleasure and honor that the American College of Legal Medicine bestowed Honorary Fellowship status to Justice Noma Gurich of the Oklahoma Supreme Court at the 65th Annual Conference in Houston. This prestigious recognition is a testament to her outstanding contributions to the field of legal medicine, particularly through her remarkable efforts in organizing the “A Day with the Judges” conference in Oklahoma City. Her dedication and leadership in co-chairing and assisting Dr. Sandy Sanbar over the past 12 years have significantly impacted the legal medicine community. The “A Day with the Judges” conferences have served as a platform to address pertinent legal medicine issues and have attracted thousands of participants, including judges, attorneys, clinicians, academicians, government officials, and students. Her commitment to fostering dialogue and education in this crucial field has left a lasting impression on all those who have attended these conferences. In recognition of her invaluable contributions, the ACLM voted to bestow upon her this well-deserved honor.
