Advocacy at the ACLM

ACLM Advocacy & National Leadership

The American College of Legal Medicine (ACLM) advances the responsible integration of medicine and law through scholarship, education, and national advocacy. Two of the College’s most impactful leadership initiatives are our Amicus Committee and our Delegation to the American Medical Association (AMA).

Together, these bodies ensure that the voice of dual-trained professionals meaningfully shapes both judicial decisions and national health policy.

Amicus Committee

Advocacy at the Intersection of Law & Medicine

Through its Amicus Committee, ACLM serves as a trusted “Friend of the Court,” submitting amicus curiae briefs in cases that present significant medicolegal issues. The Committee translates complex questions of medical practice, credentialing, professional standards, and patient safety into clear, evidence-based legal arguments that assist courts in reaching informed decisions.

Recent advocacy has focused on issues such as:

  • Hospital credentialing and due process
  • Protection of physician rights
  • Continuity of patient care
  • Standards governing medical training agreements

By participating in carefully selected cases, ACLM helps ensure that judicial rulings reflect both sound legal reasoning and an accurate understanding of medical practice realities.

Delegation to the American Medical Association (AMA)

Shaping National Health Policy

ACLM maintains an active seat in the AMA House of Delegates (HOD), the legislative body of organized medicine. Through its elected Delegation, the College brings a distinct medicolegal perspective to national policy discussions affecting physicians, patients, and the administration of justice.

The Delegation works to:

  • Shape AMA policy on medicolegal and regulatory issues
  • Advocate for due process protections within healthcare systems
  • Collaborate with specialty societies and state medical associations
  • Influence federal and state policy through AMA Federation initiatives

The ACLM Delegation also founded the Legal Medicine Caucus, uniting delegates across states and specialties who share an interest in health law and medicolegal advocacy.
